Minutes Meeting 24 May 2004

  

Present: Celia Wade-Brown, Susan Warren, Jane Loughnan, Darryl Cockburn, Mike Mellor, Chris Horne, Deborah Moir, Robert Davies, Hugh Barr

National

 New Roles

·       Celia nominated Deborah Moir as secretary- seconded by Darryl.

·       Deborah to apply for NZ Community Post envelopes: applications open 1 August 2004

·       Deborah to provide newsletter; to be proofread by other members of LSA Wellington branch

·       Celia moved that two of the three – Mike, Jane and Deborah – to be signatories on cheques.  Seconded by Chris.

·       Susan to take over temporary role of treasurer while Jane away – August to November

  

RTS14

·       Celia attended draft discussions – interesting experience discussing tactile walking (e.g. people with vision impairments).  Improving within Wellington region (e.g. vibrating pedestrian cross signal).

 

Action: Celia to raise issue of what to do with streets with wrong paving (i.e. not aligned correctly to direction of walking)

 

Conference

·       Fees discussed and tiered rates approved:

$50      LSA members

$75      Individual

$100    Organisation

·       Late fee of $25 if registering and paying after 25 October

·       Applications to be made to Transfund and LTSA for sponsorship

·       Speakers to provide Microsoft Word versions

·       Suggested LSA reusable bag with LSA logo

 

Action: Celia to apply for sponsorship

Robert to find out how much cost of putting speakers presentations onto CD for purchasing. Mike, Wendy (Christchurch LSA) and Celia to finalise Conference programme – form to be put onto website and fees payable by cheque

 

Wellington

Five Lunchtime Walks

·       Launch excellent.  Good feedback

·       Idea to broaden this to other areas, particularly lower SES areas e.g. Naenae, Porirua East, Newtown.  Celia mentioned possibly Island Bay.  Wainuiomata and Strathmore also mentioned.

·       Focus on 30-40 minutes so need a focus point e.g. library, shops

 

Action: Mike to find Walkway maps

 

 

Transport Strategy

·       Mentions pedestrian strategies including getting people out of cars and into other modes of transport

·       Noted new traffic lights on Kelburn Parade (outside Victoria University).  Discussion as to what is the phasing of them?  Are they effective?

 

 

Tinakori Road Town Belt

·       Devastation quite large as result of February flooding

·       Removal of some trees necessary – clean-up about to commence.  Noted large amount of work required by Council to clear

·       Southern Walkway above Hay Street now open and working on Northern Walkway

 

 

Te Papa

·       New crossing over from BP to avoid walking around three sides

·       The Warehouse have agreed to barriers being put in so that pedestrians can walk safely in front of cars and under canopy – Council designing and Warehouse have agreed to public using space

 

 

Pedestrian Strategy

·       Noted Regional Land and Transport (RLT) committee approved the Pedestrian Strategy (meeting held 18 May in Paraparaumu Council offices)

 

 

Edinburgh’s Pedestrian Access (in contrast with Wellington)

·       Susan discussed Edinburgh’s pedestrian access: good routes for getting to certain points however tension between walkers/cyclists/buses and lanes used

·       People had no idea of linkages between pedestrian/bus routes and recreational walks

·       Noted quite hard to find information in Wellington of walks and how they all fitted together – various information in several outlets – are people aware of what is available in Wellington?

·       Booklet like Christchurch offers which outlines all of Wellington’s walks would be useful

·       Level of facilities (e.g. toilets) to encourage walking good

·       Maps not well integrated as to how to get from city to town belt

·       Noted possibility of providing information services with folder of all Wellington walks

·       Should we be doing this for Porirua and Hutt Valley?

·       Aerial photographs of Wellington to be available soon on website

 

 

Action: Susan to contact Elizabeth Viggers, author of  “Around and About in Wellington” Assemble information and maps and discuss at next meeting – identify areas for improvement. Celia to find out what Council is planning over next year with regard to walks and information

 

 

Agenda for duration of year

·       Cable Car Walks to be discussed

·       Funding and Transport

·       Reclaim the footpaths to be campaigned again

·       “Stepping Out” – national campaign desirable (possibly March 2005), suggest to Council in July and find sponsors

·       Conference

·       Balance (noting we have number of unpaid invoices): $2868.16
