Walk Wellington
- Living Streets Aotearoa originated from Walk Wellington but those who were
part of Walk Wellington at the time were also interested in advocacy for
pedestrians etc – LSA was formed.
- Sue started guided tours under “Walk Wellington”. Set up as a business
venture, mainly for visitors, with two main areas: (1) Essential Wellington
Walks and (2) Personalised, Group & Specialty Walks
- Leaflets available at art stands, hotels etc
- International marketing group in Auckland; “Inbound tour operators” based in
Auckland and Hamilton – give information to wholesalers who give to travel
agents. No such agency in Wellington but day set up in Auckland by “Positively
Wellington”
- Specialty walks e.g. hard-to-find art galleries; World of Wearable Arts –
specialty/designer shops
- Cost?? – market is for visitors therefore cost is ok. If the market was
citizens the cost would need to be different and include subsidised walks etc.
- These walks could become an avenue for community street audits
- Meets with LSA objectives of social and economical benefits
- Guided tour walks in Napier very successful venture
- Melbourne also has specialty tours where you are matched u with a guide who is
also interested in that particular area
- Two levels of guides required for two business areas: some reimbursement for
guides (recruitment/training for guides) – benefits could include
behind-the-scenes at Te Papa, city galleries etc
- LSA website to hold information on the different city guided walks – quality
essential (i.e. reputable services); could include for example ‘Friends of
Botanic Gardens’ and ‘Karori Sanctuary’ which both have guides.
- Walk Wellington could be an umbrella for other smaller walking guided tours
- Sue to produce a written proposal including risk assessment, rights and
responsibilities, budget break-down etc as next stage
- Discretionary funding from Mayor – deadling 12th April. Walk Wellington could
be put in as not-for-profit under LSA and the funding could sit in LSA account
(funding given by 30 June)
- Accounting package to be proposed for LSA to clarify income and expenses. If
Walk Wellington were to become a subsidiary, LSA would need to be aware of
incomings and outgoings
- Matter to be raised at national meeting 22/4.
- Walk Wellington business that supports LSA objectives – motion from Mike
Mellor that Walk Wellington work towards being a not-for-profit part of LSA.
Celia Wade-Brown seconded.
- Celia Wade-Brown moved that in the interim LSA will support Walk
Wellington’s proposal for funding from mayor of up to $10 000 subject to budget
produced by Sue. Seconded by Mike Mellor.
Process to possibly lead to Memorandum of Understanding –
potentially could be part of email system e.g. walkwellington@livingstreets.org.nz
