1. Revitalising the group
Discussion about how to revitalise the group. Decided what is needed is to:
· get more people involved in the group
· elect a core committee of 4-6 people to run the group
· continue with monthly meetings on the fourth Monday of the month at 6pm
· have speakers or other fun activities every 2 or 3 months at 6.30 pm after the business part of the meeting
· send meeting notices, minutes of meetings and other information to all Wellington members (including Hutt and Porirua), rather than to the yahoo email group which hasn’t got all Wellington members on it, and has other people from around the country
· advertise the next meeting with the Eley Carlton presentation widely and hope to get lots of people interested in being involved
2. Eley Carlton presentation
The next meeting has been changed to 19th February to accommodate Eley Carlton, who is visiting Wellington. Eley is an Environmental Protection Specialist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He has been working on the Smart Growth programme which provides communities and stakeholders with the necessary tools, research, and policy to assist them in pursuing development options that are good for the environment, community, and economy.
Eley visited Wellington in 2003 on a scholarship, and produced a report
"Smart Growth Down Under: Taking Steps Toward Sustainable Settlements in
New Zealand", wrote about Wellington as a model for smart growth, and contributed
to the development of the Ministry for the Environment's Urban Design Protocol.
This will be a very interesting presentation, so if it is advertised widely, it should attract lots of people. There will be a strong membership drive at the end to get more active members involved in the group.
Ideas of ways to advertise:
· Press release to local papers – Wellingtonian, Capital Times, City Life etc
· Local radio stations eg Access radio community notice board etc
· Other relevant networks – Option 3, Transport 2000, Council (councillors and officers), people who wrote submissions to Council on walking issues, Tuesday lunchtime walkers, Walk Wellington, Ministry for the Environment, Greens, Heartbeat, Aro Valley Community Council, Cycle Action Wellington, Kapiti Transport Action Group, Kapiti Bridlepaths and Walkways, ask all members to circulate to their relevant networks………..
