1.  Wellington City Walking Plan

There are lots of reasons for the Council’s desire to put together a walking plan including:

-        traffic congestion

-        becoming “carbon neutral”

-        specifically journey-to-work (if this can be improved, this will flow through to walking at all times)

There are lots of questions surrounding what the walking environment should look like but there are limited resources.  Consideration is also being given to the Town Belt and other reserve lands as part of the plan.

So far, an enormous amount of work has gone into preparing maps utilising GIS expertise (as well as researching the literature etc).  This information generated shows the number of people and their main mode of travel to work in the CBD (based on census data) and from this the proportion of potential people to be shifted to a walking mode (those who live within 25 minutes of walking of the CBD boundary) is evident.

The team is now wanting to look at key walking routes into the CBD from each suburb – Living Streets Wellington may be contracted to commence some street reviews.

They are also wanting to find out from those working in the CBD what routes they would prefer to use to walk to work and how to make these easier to use.

The team will return in a couple of months to show where they are up to and gain more information from Living Streets Wellington members.

Training Workshops

There are three workshops happening soon which Living Streets Wellington

members might like to attend.  We want to upskill our members who are

willing to get actively involved in our Wellington group by writing submissions, finding funding for projects, or communicating our messages by writing media releases or articles.

If you're interested in getting involved and attending any of the following workshops, please contact Liz Thomas: liz.thomas at livingstreets.org.nz

Car Free Day

Saturday 22nd September

- Traditionally, when this day is held on a week-day, Public Transport gets overloaded and this puts people off using it;

- As this year it’s a Saturday, Living Streets Wellington could create a joint promotion with Cycle Aware Wellington (CAW) to encourage people to walk/cycle/run to their home sports game

- Press release to be put together

Action: Celia/Jenn/Debs (?) to put together press release

Next Meeting

This will be held Monday 27th August and will be held with Wayne Tacon (WCC Manager Property and Parking Services) and the Wellington Parking and Infringement Services to discuss footpath parking, sandwich board issues etc.
