Walking awards

Living Streets Aotearoa is asking transport and health professionals to step up to the challenge and enter for the new National Walking Awards. Please see out walking awards page

Community Street Reviews and Audits

A Community Street review is an assessment of the walkability of a route from the point of view of the users. A group of people walk the route and use a simple rating technique to identify problem areas and potential improvements. Please see our Community Street Review and Audit page.

Walking and Cycling micro-fund

The Walking and Cycling Micro-Fund is run jointly by Living Streets Aotearoa and Cycling Advocates’ Network.  The Fund provides opportunities for organisations to apply for funding of up to $1000 towards events, promotions and initiatives which promote walking and cycling as a transport option for short trips. The New Zealand Transport Agency provides the funding.

World Environment Day, 5 June - Foot Art

Living Streets Aotearoa urge people to get back on their feet and reduce emissions. Walking, jogging or running are a great way to get around - especially where there are terrific shortcuts through parks, lovely views and good local shops and cafes. See our World Environment Day - Foot Art page. See here for Walking Poles collage photo (152K JPEG file)

Mobile Phones not on for drivers

Mobile phone use by drivers represent a hazard to walkers and other road users. It is time for NZ to join many other countries in banning their use by drivers. See our Mobile Phone page for more information and numerous links.

Getting There Community Partnership programme

The applications for the October 2007 round of Getting There Community Partnership Funding have now been assessed by a judging panel consisting of representatives from Land Transport New Zealand, Cycling Advocates' Network, Living Streets Aotearoa and an independent judge.  40 initiatives were supported - click here (48K pdf file) for details of the successful applications.  Congratulations to all those who received funding to support initiatives which promote walking and cycling for short journeys in their areas.  Look out for details of further funding rounds next year.

Local Bodies candidate survey

The elections are over - but we'll leave the responses here for a little longer.

This is a combined Living Streets Aotearoa and Cycling Advocates' Network project.

It is an email survey of candidates standing for election to selected local bodies around New Zealand. It indicates the level of understanding of, and attitudes towards, walking and cycling issues. It also offered an opportunity to raise awareness among candidates of walking and cycling issues.

The Councils selected were chosen largely because Living Streets Aotearoa and/or the Cycling Advocates' Network have local groups in these areas. Email addresses for a significant minority of candidates were unavailable, and possibly some candidates couldn't reply. So the survey is not comprehensive. Nor can it be taken as indicating support or otherwise for individual candidates: many candidates supportive of walking and cycling may not have replied.

Some candidates are standing for more than one local body; however, these candidates are listed only once. Look at the top the page for your region and click on the name of any candidate that you are interested in or just scroll through the page.

DHB candidates may be listed with a associated town or city or in the regional list.

Results are here now.
