Subject: Walking and Cycling Survey Local Government Elections Dear Candidate This brief survey is being sent on behalf of Living Streets Aotearoa (www.livingstreets.org.nz) and the Cycling Advocates’ Network (www.can.org.nz). It is being sent to candidates standing for selected local authorities and health boards in this year’s local body elections. Living Streets and CAN promote walking and cycling as a fundamental part of daily life, and our membership is interested in the attitudes of candidates toward these forms of ‘active transport’. We would appreciate your taking ten minutes to respond to the following questions. Where you consider a question not applicable, please indicate with n/a. Please feel free to make additional comments where required. We would appreciate a reply by Monday 24 September 2007. Responses to the questionnaire will be collated and passed on to relevant local walking or cycling organisations. Selected responses will be posted on the Living Streets and CAN websites. What do you see as the advantages of walking and cycling as a form of transport in your area? 2. How would you rate facilities for cyclists and pedestrians in your area? (Good, average, poor). This could include such things as cycleways, pedestrian overbridges, cycle parking, quality of footpaths. 3. Would you support lowered speed limits on certain streets to enhance their use by pedestrians or cyclists? 4. Are you aware of where walking or cycling paths/lanes/routes are? 5. How well signposted are these facilities? 6. Are you aware of parts of the roadways or public spaces cyclists or pedestrians can’t use? 7. What would you do about these barriers? 8. Do you think there are certain conditions under which parking on footpaths is permissible? 9. If your ward/community does not have a cycling or walking route map, would you support creating one? 10. Does the council have a walking and cycling strategy, and if not, would you support having one? 11. Do you support travel plans in schools and workplaces? If so, what would you to do facilitate them? 12. What other techniques could you suggest to improve walking and cycling as a regular activity? 13.
