Living Streets Aotearoa urge people to get back on their feet and reduce
emissions. Walking, jogging or running are a great way to get around -
especially where there are terrific shortcuts through parks, lovely views and
good local shops and cafes.
"Urban design to
make walkable cities is key for metro Councils", says Cr Celia Wade-Brown,
President of Living Streets Aotearoa.
Celia and Lily Linton have created this prototype of a pou
hikoi or walking pole to draw attention to walking all or part of a
journey as a pleasant way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While helping the
climate, walkers also enjoy better mental and physical health, can fuel up on
anything from potatoes to kiwifruit, water crackers to croissants and still feel
good!

There will be twenty poles around Wellington to encourage more people to choose
to walk more often. The painted poles will be decorated with shoes at strategic
locations to remind people they can enjoy a lovely way to arrive at work in a
good mood instead of fuming in a traffic jam!
The poles mark World Environment Day 2008 and are part of the Ministry for the
Environment's Kick The Carbon Habit programme.
