Walking and Cycling Micro-Fund

The Walking and Cycling Micro-Fund is administered jointly by Living Streets Aotearoa and Cycling Advocates’ Network with funding provided by the New Zealand Transport Agency.  The Micro-Fund provides opportunities for organisations to apply for funding of up to $1000 towards events, promotions and initiatives which promote walking and cycling as a transport option for short trips.

Unfortunately this funding is not available for the 2009 -2010 year. We are looking for ways of continuing the micro-fund in the future; in the mean time we encourage you to try these other sources of funding for your walking projects:

1.  Your local Council

Councils apply to the New Zealand Transport Agency under the Community Focussed Land Transport Activities Programme for walking and cycling programmes and activities.  NZTA will fund 75% of the cost (and your local council 25%) for community programmes or events run by community groups.  Talk to your local Council about the funding available for you to run your walking and cycling events.

Most Councils also provide grants for projects and events - contact your local Council soon to find out when youneed to apply.

2.  The Road Safety Trust funds community safety initiatives

3.  AMI insurance

AMI insurance will fund high visibility gear for Walking School Bus volunteers.  Talk to the Road Safety Coordinator at your Council who will be able to put you in touch with the AMI local manager.

4.  NZ Police

NZ Police have funding for promoting road safety. Talk to your local superintendent about funding for programmes such as cycle training.

5.  District Health Boards

District Health Boards are also a source of funding for activities which promote health, such as walking and cycling.
