We invite you to join us for the fifth annual Wellington Jane's Walk from 2pm - 4pm, Sunday 4 May 2025. We will be meeting by the waka at the Wharewaka, Odlins plaza, Taranaki St wharf.
This year's walk is organised by AWE awesome walking envisaged and Living Streets Aotearoa.
We will don our Jane Jacobs hats and follow along in her footsteps as we imagine how Cuba Street works for us - the good, the bad and the please FixIt.
We will walk north to south along Cuba Street, crossing from the waterfront, through Cuba Mall and finish at Pukeahu Park on Mount Cook.
This year's walk is in collaboration with Ellen Blake of AWE awesome walking envisaged. We will record our impressions on the new international Walkability app to start building a picture of walkability in Wellington. The new Walkability app was developed by Walk 21 to allow citizens of all ages and abilities to share their walking experiences. Sharing walking experiences helps communities and responsible authorities to understand walkable places and identify areas that need further improvement to make walking better for everyone.
Previous participants enjoyed the citizen-led nature of Jane's Walks with the opportunity to learn something new about familiar streets and take an active part in the discussions.
It's free and fun. We would appreciate an r.s.v.p. to WalkingAWE@gmail.com but you are most welcome to just turn up on the day.
Jane Jacobs was a New York urbanist who in the 1960's successfully fought motorway development through her New York neighbourhood. She supported a community based approach to city building and wrote her well-regarded book 'The Death and Life of Great American Cities'. She introduced many novel ideas for the time including the concept of 'eyes on the street', and the idea of cities as ecosystems of organised complexity, everything interacting with everything else in many particular ways. She was a great advocate of improving diversity with many people following their own small plans and building up community relationships over time. Walks are held worldwide around her birthday in May annually.
