City centre canopies (Porirua)

The Porirua City Council decided in 1994 to commission a project to cover the pedestrian areas of the shopping centre between Hartham Place and Serlby Place with distinctive canopies at a cost of nearly $4 million. The proposal was paid for by the Council as they are over a public street and for the benefit of all people visiting the City Centre, and it was hoped that the canopies would revitalise the central city shopping area.
