DOC Information: Franz Josef tracks and walks

Franz Josef is famous for its spectacular glacier, but if you spend time to explore you will discover there is more to see than this magnificent river of ice. The area stretches from isolated beaches beside the Tasman Sea to some of New Zealand's highest peaks. The forests are home to a number or rare and endangered birds including whio (blue duck), kaka, kakariki and our rarest species of kiwi the rowi (Okarito brown kiwi).
