Walk Taupo

Contact: Walk Taupo Chairperson: Jacky Gartner, 07 378 6960

Walk Taupo was formed July 2006. It is made up of a group of volunteers with support from Taupo District Council, Sport Waikato, Public Health Organisation, Living Streets Aotearoa, Bike Taupo and Educating NZ Empowering Educators.  The Taupo Community needed representatives from their community to encourage and support walking as a recreational and daily activity.

The Walk Taupo committee meets as and when required. It has identified several needs and goals for the first year:

  • produce a walking and biking map (in conjunction with Bike Taupo) which has been available from January 2007 from several outlets
  • establish an indoor walking venue which has been done from May 2007 in conjunction with Taupo District Council at the Taupo Events Centre.  This facility is open for walkers 7 days a weeks from 6am to 8am for $1 charge.
  • hold an event to to promote the newly formed gully tracks that link a number of the suburban streets. This event was organised and successfully held November 2006.
  • Other goals we are looking at is to produce a brochure advertising 5 lunch time walks, plus setting some long term goals - looking at needs and requirements in the next ten years.
