Living Streets North Shore is the walking action branch of Living Streets Aotearoa working primarily in the area previously covered by North Shore City. Like Living Streets North Shore on Facebook.

We focus on the Devonport-Takapuna and Kaipatiki local board areas with an interest in projects as far north as Albany and Hibiscus Coast and around the Auckland waterfront (on both sides of the Waitematā).

We are firm supporters of the Skypath project and the SeaPath concept. We are delighted that the new Wairau Creek bridge was opened in December 2015, providing a safe walking and cycling link between Milford and Castor Bay.

Watch this space for information about the next Walk2Work Day. The aim it to encourage more people to walk to work or to their public transport hub an to recognise that almost everyone who uses PT walks or rolls part of the way to and from their workplace. In 2015 Auckland Transport and Living Streets North Shore volunteers handed out flowers to people walking to the ferry at Devonport, and elsewhere on the Shore.

Meetings

Living Streets North Shore holds meetings in Takapuna as need arises. Contact us to join our mailing list for upcoming meetings and events.

Living Streets North Shore makes submissions on local plans which may impact on those choosing to walk for transport or recreation on the North Shore.

Local information - Walking Maps and Walking Groups

Explore the Shore by using these walking route booklets - download them here.

The Explore the Shore walks have been developed by Margaret Scrymgeour, who has been involved in walking activities on the North Shore for the past 30 years.  These walks, "road" tested by Margaret and her family and friends, are now published in three booklets, with assistance from Albany Newcomers Network (digital layout), and Albany CoCo Inc.  These booklets are also available at local tourist information centres and libraries, while stocks last.

Volume 1: Albany & Greenhithe area walks  Download Albany & Greenhithe booklet (PDF, 1.5MB)

Volume 2: Bays to Devonport area walks     Download Bays to Devonport booklet (PDF, 2.4MB)

Volume 3: Kaipatiki area walks (on the Shore, west of the Northern motorway)  Download Kaipatiki booklet (PDF, 8.0MB)

Auckland Transport's Auckland cycle, run and walkway maps provide links to some popular active routes and other information about walking throughout Auckland.

The North Shore has two major walking routes. You can walk part of these routes to get from A to B or for a leisurely stroll. Tackling the full Coastal Route (23km) requires some planning for tidal conditions and the ability to walk over uneven terrain.

Te Araroa trail - North Shore - Coastal trail from Long Bay to Devonport (printed guide available from local i-Site Visitor Centres)

Devonport-Takapuna green route - mostly off-road route passing through Narrow Neck, Bayswater and Hauraki, including the recently rebuilt and widened 'pipe bridge' linking O'Neill's Cemetery and Northboro Reserve (printed guide available from local i-Site Visitor Centres)

Harbour Sport maintains a list of local walking groups.

Descriptions of walks, with maps, developed by one of our members over many years, are also hosted by Harbour Sport.
