Living Streets Aotearoa Wellington meeting series - Monday June 22
Submitted by andysmith on Mon, 22/06/2015 - 18:00Andy Smith and Ellen Blake from the LSA exec have committed themselves to a week of meetings. Monday started with an LSA strategy meeting with Mike Mellor at the railway station.
Then it was off to the NZ Police and Superintendent Steve Greally who is the Manager Road Policing. We talked about our yellow feet, proposed law change and Vision Zero for road deaths.

Media Release 30 March 2014 - Coroner blames Pedestrian for her death?
Living Streets Aotearoa is concerned that yet again a coroner’s inquest has laid the blame squarely at the foot of the dead woman. The inquest into the pedestrian death of Vanessa Green in Wellington has found no blame on the driver. It is very difficult to determine a cause of this crash or any other crash after the fact, and it is too easy to blame the victim.

Road stopping - a Wellington submission example and Environment Court decision

This limits the future choices and potential uses for the land. Unformed legal road is often used by pedestrians for accessways or potentially could be used as such.

Living Streets Aotearoa welcomes the final report of the Cycling Safety Panel, with a Government commitment to fund $100 million of improvements for cyclists and a focus on safe speeds.
We are keen to see better cyclist facilities on-road to keep the footpaths safe for pedestrians. There were 41 pedestrian deaths on New Zealand roads to November this year and we look forward to the government urgently addressing the human toll of these shocking statistics.

Traffic lights – No Green Cross light and Green traffic light (for turning traffic) should be on in the same direction. Start Green Cross light before vehicle's green light (at least 5 seconds).
Countdown walk signals to inform pedestrians of time left to cross
At all intersections pedestrians should be able to cross using all 4 sides.
